The poetry competition that has been an annual event since 2014 is open to writers either living in Aotearoa New Zealand or New Zealand citizens and residents living abroad. Learn more about the history of the Monica Taylor Poetry Prize.
Poems must be original and previously unpublished. Submissions must not exceed 50 lines excluding the title. Multiple entries are permitted when accompanied by the NZ $5 entry fee per poem.
The winning entry of the 2023 Monica Taylor Poetry Prize can be viewed on the Takahe website.
The 2024 poetry contest will be judged by Renee Liang, a poet, paediatrician, playwright and essayist who is based in New Zealand. To learn more about what Renee looks for in poetry if you are intending to enter this competition please visit the Renee Laing page on the Takahē Magazine website.
Entries close at 11:59PM 30th September 2024. The shortlist will be made available around 25th November 2024. The Poetry Prize winner and second place getter will be announced around 5th December 2024.
General Guidelines for Entering the Monica Taylor Poetry Competition
- Open to writers living in Aotearoa New Zealand and NZ citizens or permanent residents living abroad.
- Entries can be in English, or in Te Reo Māori with English translation.
- 50 lines maximum excluding the title.
- No simultaneous submissions are allowed.
- Submissions are accepted online via the Submittable webpage of the Takehe website
